Sumiao Hunan Kitchen, Cambridge MA

Project: Sumiao Hunan Kitchen
Town: Cambridge, MA
Architect: McMahon Architects
Square Footage: 4,442
Open Date: 2017

Our team at M&M Construction paired up with McMahon Architects to turn an empty space into this beautiful new restaurant for Sumiao! The owners wanted to create a lively, upscale restaurant for the Cambridge, MA community, serving a wonderful selection of Hunan-style Chinese food for patrons.

We discussed the goals for the project with McMahon and came up with a few unique touches that would create a beautiful ambiance and help draw in a wide array of patrons! For the color scheme of the restaurant, we paired wood tables, floors, & support beams with a beautiful blend of bright pastel yellows, blues and purples as accents around the space. We built custom drink rails and benches, as well as a unique cocktail table for larger parties. We also added plenty of bar seating for patrons to enjoy Sumiao’s fantastic selection of Asian-inspired cocktails and beers! We also added metal screens that can be pulled to separate the restaurant for private parties and events, giving the space a bit of additional utility and versatility.

For the kitchen, we added a bit of prep space in the dining room that allows patrons to see the staff working, but we kept the majority of the operation in the back of the house. With plenty of seating, and a delicious menu, we helped make this bustling restaurant is worth the visit for the ambiance alone!
